Child Psychiatry Surrey

Dr Andrew Hill-Smith has been a child psychiatrist for over 30 years, and a consultant for 25 years, working in the NHS in Surrey, until now. 

His NHS experience involved working in a CAMHS clinic and then later with the Hope service,  a crisis team.  He has held a number of leadership roles within Surrey and with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. 

 He has set up in private practice in order to continue to add to the mental wellbeing of young people.  

He has a special interest in OCD assessment and treatment and for those with non psychotic hallucinations. 

Assessment and treatment

Input is provided for the full range of child and adolescent mental health difficulties, with the exceptions as below.

Advice, support, diagnosis and medication are provided as needed.

Assessments are typically face to face and last about 90 minutes.  A report / summary is provided following the appointment.

Psychological treatments, including exposure and response prevention (ERP) can be provided.  EMDR can also be provided.

OCD and Hearing voices are special interests.

Conditions NOT covered.  

Unfortunately, ADHD, ASD assessments, and Eating disorders are not covered.   ADHD medication treatment is included however. 

Crisis response will need to be attended to via the NHS.

Where?

Typically initial assessments are in person.

In person appointments are held at Brighter spaces, Guildford.  GU1 3UAIt is next to Olivo restaurant.   Be wary - street numbering is a bit irregular. 

The nearest car parks are at Millbrook or Castle car park  

Follow up meetings are usually online, using MS teams.

Charges

£390 for Initial Assessment lasting 90 minutes, and report

£130 for follow up meeting which may include medication  and / or therapy

Private prescription admin fee is £35

At the moment, self funding or BUPA, but links to other insurance companies may be established.

Referrals

Up to the age of 18 years is the usual range, but there is some flexibility

Insurance companies may require a GP referral, if applicable.

Self referrals are accepted.

Typically, a free phone meeting is offered to see whether a full assessment feels suitable for all parties - see Contact information page. 

It is useful to bring or send any  relevant documentation. 

Practicalities.  Typically Wednesday and Thursday, though there is some flexibity

Appointment availability.  A waiting list is not maintained.   Waiting times are up to three weeks.  

Therefore, if there is no appointment within the three week time frame, it is best to make a repeat approach at a later date.
